Casts and Splints FAQs
Your cast has been applied to immobilize and maintain alignment of the affected area. Please follow the instructions below.

  • KEEP THE CAST CLEAN AND DRY
Moisture under the cast can cause skin to itch and breakdown.
  • COVER THE CAST WHILE BATHING
    • A plastic bag should work the best.
    • If the edges become wet, you can dry it with a towel or let it dry on its own. Please do not dry it with a hairdryer.
    • If the cast becomes grossly wet, contact our office.
  • DO NOT SLIDE OBJECTS UNDER THE CAST
"Itching or scratching" under the cast can cause the padding to bunch in spots leaving no padding in others.
  • ELEVATE THE ARM TO REDUCE SWELLING
Prop on pillows, raise arm while walking and continue to move the fingers.
  • WATCH FOR SIGNS THE CAST MAY BE TOO TIGHT
    • Contact this office if you note increased pain, swelling, stiffness, or numbness and tingling in your fingers.
    • You may go to your local ER and have the cast split if these symptoms occur in the middle of the night.
    • You will need to be seen in this office the following day for application of a new cast
