Viscosupplementation
There has been recent interest in intraarticular injections of hyaluronan in the knee (Synvisc and Hyalgan). These injections are an attempt to improve joint lubrication by providing some components found in normal joint fluid. These injections are given weekly, either three or five times. They have been shown to improve symptoms of osteoarthritis for up to six months. Overall, as with steroid injections, the improvements are short term.
